Key Takeaways

  • If you are joining: copy the full link again, check your server count, and ask for a new invite if it still fails.
  • An invite created with the default setting lasts 7 days, so an old link in a post or video description may simply have expired.
  • If you own the server, check Server Settings > Invites first. It lists active invites and the pause control. A regular invite missing from that list has expired or been removed. A vanity URL is managed separately, under Boost Perks.

Discord's Invalid Invite Links article (retrieved 2026-09-28) lists four reasons an invite fails. The invite is unknown or expired, the code is wrong, the joining account has hit the server limit, or the account is banned. The fix depends on which side you are on, so this guide splits the checks for the person joining and for the server owner.

Quick Diagnosis

What you see Most likely cause Who can fix it
"Unknown/Expired Invite" or "Invalid" The invite expired, was removed, or hit its use limit; or the code is wrong The server owner, with a new invite, or the joiner, by rechecking the code
The code looks right but still fails A typo or a changed letter case The person joining, by copying the full link again
The link works for others but not for you Server limit reached, or a ban The person joining (limit) or the server admins (ban)
A message says invites are paused The owner paused invites The server owner
An old vanity link no longer works Boost level lost, or no public channel The server owner

If You Are Trying to Join

1. Copy the full link again

Discord's help article notes that invite "codes are case sensitive." A code retyped from a screenshot or a video is easy to get wrong. Copy the whole link from the original message or page, including every character after discord.gg/.

2. Ask for a fresh invite

If the invite is expired or unknown, Discord's advice is simple: "ask for a new invite link." You cannot revive an old one from your side. Discord's Invites 101 article (retrieved 2026-09-28) adds that once an invite is deleted, "it can not be remade with that same invite code."

3. Check how many servers you are in

According to Discord, "a user cannot be a member of more than 100 servers," or 200 with Nitro. At the limit, the invite fails even though it is valid. Leave a server you no longer use, then try again. Discord also notes that if your Nitro ends while you are above 100 servers, you have to get back below 100 before joining more.

4. Consider a ban

If you were banned from that server, the invite will not work for you. Discord's article explains that "server bans are based on IP addresses," which means a second account on the same network is not a reliable workaround. Only the server's admins can remove a ban.

5. Check for paused invites

If the server has paused its invites, Discord shows a notice instead of letting you join. According to the Pause Invites FAQ (retrieved 2026-09-28), users "will be notified that invites are paused" and "will be unable to join." There is nothing to fix on your side. Try again later.

6. Contact Discord Support

If none of these explain it, the Invalid Invite Links article ends with Discord's own escalation route: reach out to Discord's Support team at dis.gd/contact, which redirects to its request form.

If You Own the Server

When members report that your link does not work, start in Server Settings > Invites, which lists your active invites and has the pause control.

Check whether the invite expired

Discord's Invites 101 article states that the invite panel shows "a 7 days access link by default" unless you changed that channel's settings. Any invite created with that default setting expires after 7 days, wherever it was posted. When you create or edit an invite, you can change how long it stays valid and how many times it can be used. The same article describes a link "that doesn't expire at all" as an option "if you are in a Community Server." Otherwise, choose the longest duration available to your server.

Check the use limit

An invite with a maximum number of uses stops working once it reaches that number. A link that worked for the first 10 people and then failed may have hit a 10-use limit.

Check whether invites are paused

The Pause Invites FAQ says members with Manage Server can pause invites under Server Settings > Invites, and that pausing covers "invite links, embeds, and vanity URLs." It also blocks joins through Server Discovery. If someone paused invites during a raid and forgot to resume them, every link looks broken. Use Enable Invites in the same place.

Check whether the invite was removed

Anyone with the right permission can remove an invite in Server Settings > Invites. Because a deleted code cannot be recreated, replace the link wherever it was shared.

Check your vanity URL

A vanity URL is what Discord calls a Custom Invite Link (retrieved 2026-09-28). Discord documents these ways it can stop working:

  • No public channel. Discord says that if no text channel is visible to @everyone, "the Custom Invite Link will no longer work." Keep at least one text channel visible to @everyone.
  • Lost boost level. The link requires Server Boost Level 3. The Server Boosting FAQ (retrieved 2026-09-28) says that after a server loses a level, "the Custom Invite Link will be lost and become available to other servers after 30 days."
  • Removal by Discord. The Custom Invite Link article says the link "can be removed if we discover abuse or if there's an intellectual property conflict."
  • Paused invites. Pausing applies to vanity URLs too, as covered above.

Check for Apply to Join

If the server uses Apply to Join, a valid invite leads to an application instead of a direct join. Discord's Server Member Applications article (retrieved 2026-09-28) says pending applicants "cannot view any server content" until an admin approves them. To a new member, that can look like a broken invite. For people you want to let in directly, the same article says members with the Kick Members permission "can create special invite links that bypass the application process."

Joined, but Cannot Chat or See Channels?

Some reports of a "broken invite" are not invite problems at all. The member joined, but cannot chat, or sees almost no channels. Two things can cause that:

  • Verification Level blocks chatting. Discord's Verification Levels (retrieved 2026-09-28) apply "before they're allowed to send text messages in a channel." On the High level, for example, a member has to be in the server for 10 minutes first, unless their account has a verified phone number, which Discord says supersedes all other requirements.
  • A verification gate hides channels. Servers that use a verification bot hide channels until the member completes a step. How Discord verification bots work covers that setup.

Prevent Broken Links

These are recommendations, not Discord rules:

  • Use the longest-lasting invite available for anything public. Community servers can create links that do not expire, per Invites 101.
  • Use one invite per place you share it. Separate links for your website, a partner server, and a video make it clear which one broke. They also show where members come from, which is how an invite tracker attributes joins.
  • Keep a public channel visible if you use a vanity URL.
  • Resume invites after a raid. Pausing is useful, but it stops every join until someone turns it back on.

If you track invites with InviteForge, each member can get a personal, permanent invite with the /create-invite command, which the InviteForge docs describe as creating one "in an available channel" if the member does not have one yet. The bot needs the Create Instant Invite permission in a text channel for that. For choosing between invite types, see permanent vs. temporary vs. vanity invites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Discord invite say invalid?

Discord's help center lists four causes: the invite is unknown or expired, the code is wrong (codes are case sensitive), the account is already in the maximum number of servers, or the account is banned from that server.

Why am I unable to join a Discord server through a link?

If the link opens but joining fails, check the server limit first: 100 servers, or 200 with Nitro. If the server shows that invites are paused, the owner has stopped new joins for now. A ban from that server also blocks joining.

How do I fix an invalid Discord invite link?

As the person joining, copy the full link again and ask the server for a new invite if it still fails. As the owner, create a fresh invite, and check Server Settings, then Invites, to see whether invites are paused or the link is no longer listed.

How long does a Discord invite last?

By default, an invite created from a channel lasts 7 days, according to Discord's Invites 101 article. You can change the duration and the maximum number of uses when you create or edit the invite.

Why did my vanity URL stop working?

Discord documents several reasons. The server may have lost Server Boost Level 3, and Discord says the Custom Invite Link is then lost after 30 days. Or no text channel is visible to @everyone anymore. Paused invites, or removal by Discord for abuse or an intellectual property conflict, can also stop it.
